English Program - A Glance

The program goal is to enable Std. 4 & 5 children in Tamil-medium Government/Corporation schools to understand and speak English. The module consists of a set of topics which have been short listed keeping in mind functional utility as well as syllabus requirements.

Key Components & Methodology

The module addresses the following skills / components:

  1. Listening to stories/ instructions to do activities/conversations & songs
  2. Vocabulary building
  3. Comprehension
  4. Expression
  5. Self – learning

The methodology used to provide exposure to these skills is as below:

  • Audio with visual accompaniment (either story booklets/picture cards)
    The audio is interactive in nature. Besides providing an opportunity for all children to listen, it gives a chance for a few children to speak, either in response to a question or by way of mere repetition
  • Interactive activities and games
    A mix of activities/games involving question-response & conversation facilitates:
    • Interaction among children
    • Interaction between the teacher & children
      This provides an opportunity for children to listen to & speak in English in class (i.e. comprehension & expression)
  • Materials
    A variety of materials such as story booklets, picture cards, posters, flashcards, activity charts & board games provides the opportunity for:
    • Vocabulary building
    • Self-learning by children

  • Body parts (set of 24)

Booklets

  • Going to the market (description of diff. shops & products)
  • Where is the blue ribbon? (story to teach prepositions – in, on, under & behind)
  • “Who” questions (accompaniment with audio)
  • My home (description of rooms in a house)

Posters

  • Prepositions Activity Poster
  • My home – objects (vocabulary) poster

Board Game
  • 1 board game to teach asking & responding to “who” questions relating to professions
