Tree Walk
AID India arranged a tree-walk for the Eureka Model School Children and Scholarship Students from Koovathur and Vembakkam blocks of Kancheepuram district in association with ‘NIZHAL’ (Shade), a Chennai based NGO on Saturday 21st February 2009 in between 3:00 to 4:30 PM.
Children from both Koovathur and Vembakkam were taken to the Museum at around 10:00 AM in the morning as part of their educational visit. After they completed their Museum visit, they were taken to the Nageswara Rao Park at the Luz Corner, Mylapore for the Tree Walk at 3.00 PM in the evening.
49 school students from classes I, II, III and 6 scholarship students participated from Koovathur block. 19 schools students from classes I, II and 13 scholarships students participated from Vembakkam block. On a bouquet, 87 buds blossomed along with the 8 Teachers and 6 Volunteers from Stella Maris College for women, Chennai.

Nizhal works to bring out awareness on the role and utility of trees in our lives, about the importance and need on the need to plant, propagate and care for trees - which would help in development of knowledge on trees, including the laws relating to trees in the urban setting.
Blooming Kids
Ms. Shoba Menon and Ms. Chitra from NIZHAL briefed the children about the importance of trees in today’s situation and discussed about the various types of trees. They together enjoyed and happily walked inside the park along with the children. Ms. Chitra, resource person took the young buds all around the park and stood in front of every tree and explained about the facts of that tree. She explained about 16 trees and their habitat.

Chitra explained about the trees for more than 1:30 hours. Her explanation was more interactive and livelier. All the children were enthusiastically listening and asked so many questions in-between walking and clarified their doubts. At last Chitra asked the children to recall the trees that she explained and all the children remembered all the 16 trees and their habitats. After the tree walk, children were allowed to play in the park by 4:30 PM. Overall, the children, resource persons, volunteers and the teachers enjoyed the tree walk and the day.
